And you dont know where to start. You dont even know where you are. Aint that a bitch?
You are not sleepy neither tired of writing. You just find yourself wishing that everyone who wants you to publish something could go away on a vacation.
Well, not to worry. You’re just stuck. You have your goals figured out however, you cant seem to pull off a good starting point.
What could possibly work for you is that you must keep in mind that what you’re writing is a draft. A rough, stinky and ugly draft. You wont pull off a perfect article the first time. Trust me. (Unless you’re Obama or something)
You can try a lot of things, some work best used in combination. Here are some approaches that I work with while writing articles;
Stack Up your Points
You feel you have all the data you need, but you need to think if you have all of them stacked-up. What you could possibly do is write down a list which is inline with your main points.
Write all the information that you could come up. Include those information that pop-out of nowhere inside your head. Unless you keep a clipboard deep inside your big head, thats a good thing and I’ll be very happy for you. However, that is not the case most of the time and would never be in a very long time. It’s not a good idea to organize things on your mind. You could possibly do it, but its always easier to jot down things and arrange it on paper or notepad than to just think of how everything will fit with each other when everything is still on your genius mind.
Organizing your main points will help you avoid missing one of them. Its can also help you see what points are not really necessary for your article.
Go to the main point
Dont waste your time writing long, irrelevant and useless introductions (immediately) which often ward your readers away. Remember, it’s not necessary that you put your main point on the next paragraph (next to your useless intro). I mean, theres no rules that you need to do so. Go throw whatever has facts and figures in it that are in the tips of your fingers at the time. Remember, you’re writing a draft.
Now you’ve written something. But as you read your main point, you feel theres something missing. This is the time you read your list of points then go back and type in what you’ve missed in the section.
Once you are done with the Main points, you can go back and write your introduction and end notes. This way, you can see if what your writing in your introduction is relevant to the topic or not.
Now you ask yourself. Would the transition be smooth? Maybe not. Is it marked by an orderly and logical consistent relation of parts? Possibly. What you are actually trying to do here is to finish your first draft so you have something to arrange by systematic planning. This draft are destined to be shredded.
Remember to breathe
Dont forget that its only a draft. Nothing but a dirty, stinky, rough draft. It’s supposed (and expected) to be bad and would probably need a lot of reconstructing. What I need you to do my friend is go out and walk your dog, take some fresh air. Stretch your neck and shake off your head from whatever you are writing.
By the time that your mind clears off and you feel that you have a better state-of-mind. Go back to your seat, be reminded that you’re working with a rough draft.
If necessary, you might have the need to make sure you have already finished your research. Personally, this part is necessary when I’m pushing it too far that my brain is bleeding (no, not literally) and Im not even ready to begin typing.
Mind to Paper
You have a lot of things going on inside your mind. Thats not a bad thing, in fact its good! If you’re thinking “I dont have any idea on what to write”, then write it down. This is referred to as FREE ASSOCIATIVE writing. Jot down whatever is in your head and move forward, swerving yourself back to the topic.
Again, ask questions to yourself. Anything about the topic just to squeeze out articulations about your project. You would find yourself writing pages just by asking questions. But keep in mind that you need to put some good content there.
At the very least, you would realize why you are having a terrible time kicking off that article. This maybe hard at first to admit, but you might not have a firm handle on that certain topic as you think you have. But what the heck, you’d figure it out and soon enough, you’ll get over it.
Get someone to talk to
Seriously, have someone over or online who is interested and is well verse on your topic. This works a lot better when that someone knows your topic very well. Obviously. Because he can add up some input and he can give you more ideas.
The more crucial and complicated your topic is, the more it gets interesting this startegy could get.
If you’re going to do what I just shared, dont forget the basics, what you’re going to use. Personally, I find a paper and pen handy next to my laptop because I usually use Notepad (Windows Text Editor). You could also make use of an index card, paper, notebook, yellowpad, walls, stationery and whatever you find convenient to write with and on.
I hope you find this little article of mine useful. Remember, the most important matter is looking inside a nutshell for things you can make use of and would probably work for you just to get yourself unstuck with your article.
